How to Become a Coach or Mentor
If you like helping people and you wish to be a positive influence in someone’s life, then you might have the calling to become a coach and/or mentor. Coaches and mentors are those individuals that help others succeed. This could be success in sports, personal development, motivation, making money, or anything else that you feel you can help other people with. Coaching and mentoring not only allows you to help others, which is very rewarding, but it also allows you the freedom of owning your own business.
Helping Others
To become a coach or a mentor, you have to enjoy people and helping people. Coaching and mentoring is a calling. Either you have it or you don’t. However, if you do find that you have that inner desire to help others succeed where they’ve failed so many times, it’s time to decide what area of expertise you want to work in.
Which Field or Concept?
A coach or mentor is someone who helps others in a field that they have a lot of knowledge in. Therefore, you’ll want to choose that field or concept that you have a lot of experience with. For example, if you’ve worked for twenty years as a salesperson, you could help others develop the motivation and tools necessary to really succeed at sales or any other profession.
Mentor Coach
If you are going to become a coach or a mentor, you might as well do what it takes to become successful. This requires training, usually from a mentor coach. That’s right; a coach can help you coach others more effectively. A good coach will help you experience the benefits of coaching first hand. You’ll also get a better understanding of how the profession works, and you’ll get help choosing the school that will give you the tools necessary to develop your coaching skills. There are over two hundred training schools accredited by the ICF, or the International Training Federation.
Marketing Yourself
To become a successful coach and/or mentor, you will also need to market yourself effectively. How can you expect to coach anyone if they don’t know you’re open for business, after all? A good mentor coach will fill you in on all the latest techniques to properly market your coaching business so that you can attract more customers. That’s when you’ll notice your business really begin to take off.
The Rewards
Then, whether you’re helping others with personal growth, motivation, finding success or any other subject, you’ll find yourself positively affecting others’ lives. You’ll also find yourself working with a diverse group of interesting people almost every day. Most of the coaching and mentoring these days is done over the phone or online, which makes it very possible that you could have customers from all over the world.
Coaching and mentoring also allows you to keep a flexible schedule, to make as much money as you want as long as you’re ambitions and as long as you’re able to recognize opportunity when it comes, and you’ll be able to continue to learn and grow as you help others do the same.

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost more than 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life… and that is why I succeed. To others it doesn’t matter how many times you try.. how many times you fail…thats one of the key of becoming a great mentor.
Great post!!
A mentor may come in many forms, from a fourth grade teacher or favorite aunt to a basketball coach. All mentors share is the ability to listen and encourage. It is important to look for the right mentor/coach for you, who will believe in you and help to shape you into the person you wish to become in the future. Good post! I have a mentor, who I actually pay once a month, and I use really as a sounding board
